Wildlife & Natural Amenities
Around the village you will spot areas “Managed For Wildlife” as part of the All Ireland pollinator Plan as well as bug hotels and planting alongside our natural amenities to protect and preserve our wildlife.
Protect pollinators so that you can grow your own fruit and vegetables, shop for local produce and have flowers and wildlife in your local landscape
The 5 Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle
You can reduce waste by re-using, repairing, composting, recycling and, most importantly, preventing waste in the first place can help to protect both our country and our planet for future generations.
Rather than simply deferring wastage from one resource to another, it is much better to reduce the amount we buy altogether and to take into account the 5 Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose – with Recycle as the final option, not the first. As with other habits, incorporating this mindset into our everyday lives takes practice, but with a little awareness, it won’t be long before it becomes part of our daily routines.
Water Conservation
Over the years Ferns Tidy Towns have concentrated on projects in the community to help reduce waste especially single use plastic and food waste, conserve water and working towards making Ferns a more sustainable village.
In 2016 we won the Irish Water Value Award for the best small town in the South East region of the Supervalu Tidy Towns regional awards. The Value Water Award was about raising awareness of the importance of mindful water consumption within communities and reconnecting communities with water, creating a greater understanding of where water comes from and where waste water goes to. The project in 2016 focused on water conservation. The initiative promoted the use of rainwater harvesting in the community and the benefits of water conservation through education.
Recycling Facilities in Ferns
Bring all your glass bottles, jars and beverage cans to our Bring Centre beside the Garda Station. We also organize collections for clothing recycling, paper, ink cartridges, batteries, lightbulbs, annual hazardous waste collection and an annual electrical goods collection.
There is a wide range of services and facilities to dispose of and recycle domestic waste. As well as reducing the volume of waste going to landfill, recycling and composting your domestic waste helps to minimise charges for waste collection. Many of the items used in the home can be recycled. The benefits of recycling include a cleaner environment, the safe disposal of hazardous materials, greater awareness of excess packaging and a careful approach to the use and re-use of materials. It’s easy to get confused about what goes where. We’re here to help, with everything you ever wanted to know about your waste and recycling.
